What is Dolby Atmos?

Dolby Atmos is the world's leading immersive audio format, developed by Dolby Laboratories. Unlike conventional surround sound (5.1, 7.1) which sends audio to specific channel-based speaker positions, Dolby Atmos uses audio objects - up to 128 per mix - each of which can be dynamically positioned anywhere in a three-dimensional sphere around the listener, including directly overhead.

In a Dolby Atmos cinema room, ceiling or height speakers create a canopy of sound above the listener. Raindrops fall from overhead. Helicopters fly across the ceiling. Music instruments appear at precise heights and positions. The result is an immersive experience that conventional stereo or 5.1 audio fundamentally cannot replicate.

Dolby Atmos Speaker Configurations

Dolby Atmos home systems are described in a three-number notation: [surround channels].[subwoofers].[height channels]

* AV cost includes speakers, AV processor, subwoofers, and wiring. Excludes room acoustic treatment (₹2L–₹8L) and 4K projection system (₹3L–₹18L+).

Acoustic Treatment: The Most Overlooked Element

The single most common mistake in private cinema design is under-investing in acoustic treatment while over-investing in electronics. A ₹40 Lakh speaker system in an untreated room will sound worse than a ₹8 Lakh speaker system in a properly treated room.

The key acoustic elements for a Dolby Atmos cinema room are:

  • Bass traps (floor-to-ceiling in corners): Absorb low-frequency energy (40–120 Hz) that accumulates in room corners, causing boomy, uncontrolled bass.
  • First reflection point panels: Absorb or diffuse sound at the first bounce points on side walls, ceiling, and rear wall to reduce flutter echo.
  • Rear wall diffusion: Scatter rear wall reflections to maintain envelopment without deadening the room.
  • Room-within-a-room isolation: For zero noise bleed to adjacent rooms, a decoupled floating floor and resilient channel ceiling provides 20–30 dB of additional isolation.

VARELLI conceals all acoustic treatment within architecturally finished panels, perforated fabric walls, and custom ceiling baffles. The acoustic engineering is invisible - the room looks like a luxury interior, not a recording studio.

Projector Selection for Dolby Atmos Rooms in India

VARELLI recommends laser phosphor projectors for all dedicated cinema rooms. Key specifications to evaluate:

  • Brightness: Minimum 2,000 ANSI lumens for a 120-inch screen with full light control; 3,000+ for 150-inch screens.
  • Contrast: Native contrast ratio of 10,000:1+ (dynamic iris contrast is not equivalent to native).
  • Colour gamut: Aim for DCI-P3 coverage above 95% for accurate HDR10 and Dolby Vision playback.
  • Resolution: Native 4K (8.3 megapixels) is preferable to 4K pixel-shift technologies for reference accuracy.
  • Noise: Projector noise below 25 dB(A) for cinema rooms; laser projectors are typically quieter than lamp-based models.
